Teaching the number three can be alot of fun when looking around the environment for 3 items or the number 3 written on something – like a clock.
We picked up a few items and brought them to one location:
3 circles in the art area
3 rocks in the science area
3 dinosaurs in the sand and water table
The number three was written and laying on the writing table.
This number 3 was also in the writing area.
Three yellow pom poms in the art area.
The Dramatic Play area had three plates. It had more but this is what we are sharing today!
With a little creativity and awesome thinking, the glue bottle was found and 3 drops of glue was put on this red napkin.
Yes, there are 3 crayons!
Numeracy refers to the understanding and ability to reason with number.Instead of just talking about the number 3, a great activity takes place when a child takes the number 3 they saw on a piece of paper and tries to find it in the environment. This gives the toddlers/preschooler an opportunity to have an attitude of play – which is best practice for learning. At the same time, counting each item found is a great way to use language and math vocabulary for children’s learning math. This little fun activity uses a child themselves as a main part of the learning activity, restricts the number of concepts that a child must think about to just one (the number 3) and makes learning fun since it is “play”.
Enjoy!
